We’re creating greater public access at Alcatraz so the world can view Ai Weiwei’s art installation
Alcatraz is an iconic part of American history and folklore. Al Capone, George “Machine Gun” Kelly, Robert Stroud, a.k.a. “The Birdman of Alcatraz,” all spent time at the former federal penitentiary in the San Francisco Bay designed with the intention that no criminal could ever escape. And now we’ll do time there too – by putting our inserts in the gun gallery in the New Industries Building.
The exhibit is open from Sept. 27, 2014 to April 26, 2015.
Alcatraz Island, San Francisco: the New Industries Building gun gallery – which has been off-limits to the public until Indow window inserts were installed! The exhibit will also take place in A-Block, the Hospital, and the Dining Hall.
As a National Historic Landmark, Alcatraz can undergo only limited modifications. Its aging window frames and broken glass were hazards, but Indow window inserts sealed them off to create a safer space for visitors while preserving and showcasing the original windows.
“The misconception of totalitarianism is that freedom can be imprisoned. This is not the case. When you constrain freedom, freedom will take flight and land on a windowsill.”
— Ai Weiwei
Chinese artist and dissident Ai Weiwei, known for his work on freedom of expression and human rights, was once under house arrest and even now can’t leave China. That was just one of the many challenges of putting together the show. Another: part of the vision for his exhibit at Alcatraz calls for visitors to look down at his art from a gun gallery full of broken windows where guards once trained their weapons on prisoners below.
But that meant opening a part of Alcatraz off-limits to the public. FOR-SITE, the foundation organizing the exhibition, had to carry out this powerful vision without putting a single nail or screw hole in this National Historic Landmark. FOR-SITE asked us to custom-engineer a solution that would shield visitors from Alcatraz’s broken gun gallery windows in the New Industries Building without leaving a mark. And we did!
Kevel Home Performance, an Indow dealer in San Francisco, expertly laser measured the length of the gun gallery to create our biggest order ever. Our innovative product and Kevel’s ingenuity are two reasons FOR-SITE managed to put together this exhibit at one of America’s most popular tourist attractions just nine months after receiving State Department approval.
What are Indow window inserts?
Indow window inserts are interior storm windows that simply press inside window frames without requiring a mounting bracket or track system. Using our patented Compression Tube and laser measuring process, Indow inserts can fit nearly any window. The tubing compresses when pushed inside your window, holding the insert securely in place while sealing out cold drafts, hot air and excessive noise. Just pop them out to catch a fresh breeze.
Founded in Portland, OR in 2010 by serial entrepreneur Sam Pardue, Indow has expanded rapidly across the US and Canada. Our inserts are the simple and elegant window solution for energy efficiency, thermal insulation and noise reduction. Don’t replace your windows – get Indow windows!
